The Editorial Method of Avant Craft Journal defines how we research, write and publish original interviews, essays and visual narratives dedicated to contemporary Italian craft.

At Avant Craft, we believe contemporary craft deserves the same critical attention traditionally reserved for art, architecture and design.

Our Journal was created to go beyond documentation. Rather than simply presenting finished objects, we explore the ideas, materials and processes that shape contemporary practice. Through original conversations with artists, curatorial essays and visual narratives, we seek to understand not only what is made, but why it is made.

Original Conversations

Every interview published in Avant Craft Journal originates from a direct conversation with the artist.

Our questions are developed through careful research into each artist's practice, allowing every conversation to focus on the ideas that define their work rather than simply retracing their biography. We are interested in artistic research, material thinking and the creative process behind each object.

Whenever interviews are translated into English, we aim to preserve the artist's voice as faithfully as possible while ensuring a natural reading experience for an international audience.

An Editorial Perspective

Each article contributes to a wider editorial research project.

Rather than treating artists as individual stories, we explore the recurring themes that connect contemporary ceramic practice: materiality, movement, memory, landscape, craftsmanship, experimentation and collecting. Every interview becomes part of a broader conversation that evolves over time.

This approach allows the Journal to build meaningful connections between artists, ideas and materials, creating an editorial archive that reflects the richness and diversity of contemporary Italian ceramics.

Curated Independence

The artists featured by Avant Craft are selected independently through curatorial research, studio visits, exhibitions and ongoing dialogue with the contemporary craft community.

Our editorial choices are never driven by commercial partnerships. Every feature begins with genuine curiosity and a belief that thoughtful storytelling can deepen our understanding of contemporary craft.

Building an Editorial Archive

Our ambition is to create an evolving resource for collectors, designers, curators and anyone interested in contemporary Italian ceramics.

Through interviews, essays and visual narratives, Avant Craft Journal documents not only the people shaping contemporary ceramics today, but also the ideas that continue to define its future.
